How SCORE helped.

“I decided to attend the weekly afternoon workshops. I chose to meet in person and was assigned a small business coach who helped me obtain a business certificate and creates a business plan.  By January, I had my first client, followed by a second in early February.  By June, I had secured several clients, and I was working full-time.”

Lydia Howie is the owner of Howie Marketing and Consulting, a consulting firm that specializes in nonprofit fundraising services. Her team, which has grown to include five employees, provides nonprofit grant writing, development support, and marketing communications.

Her client list includes well-known charitable organizations, including Teatown Lake Reservation, Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, Gilda’s Club Westchester, JCY-Westchester Community Partners, and Child Care Council of Westchester, and more. Since 2000, Howie Marketing and Consulting has assisted in raising over $20 million in grant money for local nonprofits.

How SCORE Westchester Helps Small Business

We asked Lydia to share her SCORE small business success story.  Here’s what she had to say:

“I was an executive director of a non-profit organization and had decided that I wanted to start my own firm to provide marketing and fundraising services to non-profits.  I knew marketing and fundraising but did not have a clue about running my own business. I attended a SCORE presentation at Westchester Community College, and decided to contact SCORE and work with a small business coach.”

SCORE Westchester: Small Business Counseling That Works!

Our team of expert experienced small business coaches can meet with you in our White Plains office – usually with 2 counselors, or over the phone, via email, or on Skype. Their focus is on what it will take to make you successful, and all information is strictly confidential.  Here’s how that worked for Lydia:

“I decided to attend the weekly afternoon workshops. I chose to meet in person and was assigned a small business coach who helped me obtain a business certificate and creates a business plan.  By January, I had my first client, followed by a second in early February.  By June, I had secured several clients, and I was working full-time.”

At SCORE Westchester, a small business mentor is always available to help you get started and to provide ongoing support and guidance to promote ongoing success. Making the right decisions is essential. SCORE Westchester was able to provide Lydia with useful knowledge and advice and remained in her corner as long as she desired it. “Over the years, I talked with my coach about expanding my home office or renting space, liability insurance, and many other issues.”

To aspiring Westchester business owners, Lydia gives the following advice, “If you have dreamed about owning your own business, have a unique idea or a skill that is marketable, are interested in learning new skills, and are willing to work hard to make that dream a reality, then contact SCORE to work with a small business coach.  They will help you to make your dream a reality.”
