Breaking News! The results of a recent study by Pricewaterhouse Coopers confirm that SCORE Westchester is making a significant impact on hundreds of small businesses and the local economy. It is one of 320 all-volunteer chapters of a national organization that has helped more than 10 million Americans find their path to entrepreneurship over the past 50 years by providing them with FREE one-on-one mentoring services and programs.
During the surveyed year of 2013, the Westchester chapter and its network of 40 top-notch volunteer mentors were instrumental in jump starting 520 new businesses while 325SCORE clients reported that their businesses grew. Bottom line? 70 new jobs were added, making the non-profit chapter a key job creator for the private sector.
Among those client success stories is UFN, a Peekskill online floral company serving the technical and online marketing needs of retail florists that was looking to expand its operations in the U.S. and Canada.
Co-founders Ken Garland and Joe Vega turned to SCORE Westchester for help. They were paired with seasoned mentors Glenn Shell, Bob D’Agostino and others “who helped us prioritize our goals and actions and refine our business plan.” The plan evolved into a request for financing and an introduction to local bankers that the business savvy advisers executed and arranged. Result? UFN obtained the “financing we needed to hire five additional full-time employees plus a sales manager” and the company successfully expanded operations in California, Texas and Florida. “SCORE has been instrumental to our success and we’re grateful that such a fantastic free resource exists for small businesses.”
To meet the growing needs of small businesses, SCORE has significantly expanded the scope of its programs by increasing its ranks of accomplished business counselors who have excelled in their respective areas of expertise. They meet with clients not only at SCORE’s main office in White Plains but in Katonah, Armonk, Yonkers, New Rochelle and White Plains as well.
The chapter has also enhanced its popular series of workshops. Last year, SCORE Westchester presented 66workshops on a wide range of business topics led by industry experts, attracting 1,355 attendees— a 12% gain from the prior year.
It’s also more convenient for business owners to attend the workshops, thanks to SCORE Westchester’s expanded network of venue locations. Sessions are held at SCORE’s White Plains office as well as at the Greenburgh Town Hall, Mount Vernon City Hall, Scarsdale Library, White Plains Library and Yonkers City Hall.
Indeed, with such an impressive scorecard, it comes as no surprise why the chapter was named SCORE New York Metro Area Chapter of the Year.
