How SCORE helped.

Anne Finnegan is a Career Coach, and founder of Prep Your Path, a personalized resume writing and career coaching service for high school and college students, as well as recent graduates. It’s a venture she came to after an impressive career. Anne was a product manager for Kraft Foods and PepsiCo. “When I began writing resumes, I have three high school or college-age children who needed help launching their careers,” she explained, and drawing on her business background, which included lots of business writing and hiring, she assisted them all. From there, “things just evolved,” Finnegan said. “Lots of people started coming to me for help. I decided to go into business on a more professional level. That’s when I went to SCORE, as a result of a Google search!”

You Have to Believe in Yourself: Launching a Business with SCORE’s Help

Anne met with two SCORE mentors before connecting with Alan Kelsey. “They weren’t sure I had a viable business idea, or that there was any market for my service,” Anne explained. “But then I went to a professional resume writer’s conference, and that reinforced my belief that there was a growing need for professional resumes for students. I used the first two meetings to tailor my idea to move forward. Ultimately, you have to believe in yourself. The third-time meeting really was the charm. I met Alan and he said, ‘This could be a fabulous business!' But we had a lot of work to do.”

Working with Alan, Anne spent six months getting her business structured. “It was a time-consuming process, and there’s a lot involved in setting up a business plan, LLC, business accounts, product offering, pricing, marketing efforts including your “Elevator Pitch”, and doing market research.” As Anne continued working with customers, her expertise grew. “I really focused on helping people in our community, and at this point, have worked with graduates from more than 50 top colleges and universities.”

Working with SCORE Helped Me Save Money

“One of the very real ways SCORE helped me was by teaching me how I could handle some of the tasks associated with starting my business myself rather than paying a professional help,” Finnegan explained. “I saved over $5,000 using SCORE resources, by registering my logo and trademarking myself on the government website, rather than using a lawyer. That’s a lot of money.”

SCORE Westchester provides business education in a number of ways. You can meet one-on-one with a mentor, attend workshops and classes in person, or attend online webinars focused on business development topics.

Growth & Flexibility: The Entrepreneurial Lifestyle

Anne is among the many SCORE clients who started their own business after spending time in the corporate world. While she admits to occasionally missing colleagues to brainstorm with and assistants to delegate tedious tasks to, she greatly enjoys having a flexible schedule. “I work more than 40 hours a week, but I work on my schedule,” Anne explained. “I have a family and other commitments, and I appreciate being able to work when I want to, whether that’s in the evenings or on the weekends.”
